CUSTOM SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR INDUSTRY

HOW OUR SOFTWARE AND GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY WORKS.

  • 1. Why choose Line 45?
Our clients have told us that they like to work with us and recommend us to others because we’re smart, are good people and they know we’ll do our best for them. We don’t exaggerate our abilities and enjoy working in a collaborative manner. We’re not constantly just trying to upsell people. We believe in trying to find best-fit solutions for our customers. Our goal in working with you is to try to provide you with options and information to help you make good decisions, even if that means sending you elsewhere. We want every project to feel like a success and to have you wanting to work with us in the future and to tell your friends about us.
  • 2. What solutions do you offer?
Our primary focus is on helping people set-up new systems that help drive their business processes and management. While we do engage in longer term support and maintenance, we especially love projects where we can help set our clients up and help them be self-sufficient. Our primary solutions: Custom software development (web and mobile applications) Automation Database development GIS Design & implementation Geospatial & data analysis We also take on a limited number of clients where we provide ongoing GIS, mapping and data services where we manage data and/or design maps.
  • 3. What technologies and programs do you work with?
Languages: C#/.NET, Python, Javascript Frameworks: .NET, Django, Serverless Databases: Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, AWS Dynamo Cloud: Azure, AWS, Google Cloud GIS: QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, ArcPy, QPy, OGR, GDAL, Leaflet, Mapbox, PostGIS
  • 4. What industries/domains do you support or have expertise in?
Line 45 focuses on domains that include complex infrastructure and regulatory needs. Our primary focus is on energy and communications infrastructure. Energy Broadband Government Conservation We also do some work with other industries when needs relevant to our skills arise.
  • 5. What assets can you map or track with your software?
We can set-up mapping systems to track any asset with a location. If you’re looking to determine whether we can help you track the data important to your organization, the best thing to do is to reach out for a free consultation.
  • 6. Where does your team work?
Our team is a fully remote team. We have team members coast to coast in North America and provide a flexible schedule workplace to ensure our team is both productive at work and able to better balance their work lives and personal lives.
  • 7. What is your process, how would we start a new project?
We start all engagements by asking lots of questions to better understand your needs. We offer a free one hour consultation to determine, at a high level, if we’re a good fit. After that, we usually move into an analysis or discovery phase where we work with you to define your needs, goals and project requirements. This helps us identify what type of engagement fits your needs best. We operate under two types of engagement— projects and retainers. Projects: you have a problem you’re trying to solve that can be clearly identified, defined and measured. You can identify the outcomes, even if you are not sure how you want to solve the problem. An example of a project would be if a client wants to build a tool to track contracts for leases and right-of-ways for their pipelines and they know upfront that their objective is to more easily track contract obligations and expiration dates. Retainers: you know you need help or have a general need but don’t know exactly where that leads or what will come up in the process. We typically engage clients in retainers when they want ongoing support or know their team needs help but can’t define precisely what that will include and want us to assist in analysis and execution for an initiative. Once we get going, we typically define a standard routine for working together. Folks familiar with software development might know these routines as iterations or sprints. Our goal is to continually work with you to build mutual goals, communicate what we’re working on, update you on progress and how well the outcomes align with your expectations. If you’re interested in more details about how we manage software projects vs GIS projects or handle retainers, please contact us for more information.
  • 8. How do you structure your contracts (T&M, fixed price, etc)?
We structure our contracts based on the type of the project, project risk and whether it utilizes code we’ve previously developed. In general we offer the following: Time and materials (T&M) or retainer pricing for smaller projects (<$10k) and ongoing support. Retainers sort of like T&M, but we lock in our team’s availability based on your sense of ongoing needs. This ensures you get priority treatment when your needs arise. Sprint-based pricing for medium to large projects where we’re developing custom applications on a “work for hire” basis. Fixed price for product or fixed service implementations Subscription pricing for hosting or SaaS products
  • 9. I have an app I want to build, how expensive will it be?
Software development is expensive. Building business or government applications in complex industries is even more expensive. The more complex things you try to do, the more goes into developing applications. Accurately, pricing application development takes a lot of time and attention to detail. If someone is giving you cookie cutter estimates, then you’re either going to get a cookie cutter application and/or unpleasant budget surprises down the road. The cost thresholds below are general guidelines. If you have a specific goal you’re trying to accomplish through building an application, contact us for a free consultation. At a very high level, expect costs in the range of the following for custom development: Small and relatively simple applications would be in the $50k-$200k range Moderately complex applications would range from $200k-$1M Large and complex applications would likely be greater than $1M. For example, in the overall market many government software development projects range from $2M-20M, with very large projects sometimes costing an order of magnitude more than that. The prices above are for custom software development. Costs can be lower for projects that employ existing code bases or applications that can be customized to meet your needs. For example, we may propose using base applications we’ve previously developed to lower the overall cost of your project, if we have code that’s a good fit.
  • 10. Where can I get GIS data to support my project?
We work with a number of vendors to connect clients with data. For most of these vendors we simply facilitate the acquisition of data from the vendors. However, we can acquire data if that assistance is needed. We don’t have any exclusivity agreements and don’t sell data ourselves. This is just something we do to help our clients and friends.
  • 11. What GIS/Mapping software do you work with?
We try to fit clients with the software that best suits their business needs and long term goals. We are Esri Partners and also sponsors of OSGeo, which is the foundation for open source geospatial software like QGIS and PostGIS. We actively work in both Esri’s and open source ecosystems and find that most business needs can be fulfilled through either route, with pros and cons that depend a lot on customer needs and philosophies.
